Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular is a Broadway-style production that made its debut at the Hyperion Theater in Disney’s California Adventure Park in January 2003. Inspired by the 1992 animated film, the show featured all the beloved music from the movie plus a new song penned by Alan Menken written exclusively for this production called, “To Be Free.”
During each performance, 2000 guests were transported to Agrabah to watch a street rat strive to win the affection of a beautiful princess. Guests were also treated to the boisterous, fun-loving Genie, whose jokes and pop-culture references kept the show current and the audience engaged throughout the 40-minute show.
Unfortunately, the show ended last month as Disney announced plans to replace Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular with a new musical based on their feature film, Frozen.
We had the privilege of attending the show one last time during its final week of performances. Afterwards, we were invited to an exclusive meet & greet with the lead performers courtesy of our favorite Genie himself, Jeff Sumner.
After nearly 13 years and 14,500 performances, Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular took its final carpet ride on January 11, 2016. The show will hold a special place in the hearts of many Disney guests including myself. To the entire cast & crew-Happy trails!
